The RMS ELA uses the Common Core Standards as adapted by the State of Michigan Department of Education. ELA covers the areas of reading, writing, language, and speaking/listening. Please visit http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/ for a complete list of our standards in 5th grade.
Fifth grade students will continue to expand their knowledge of reading through reading and analyzing different texts from different genres. Students will read fluently, as well as, read with engagement and interest. Students will learn strategies for word solving through work study and "Grammar Keepers." In writing students will complete quality personal and fictional narratives, persuasive essays, and expository writings. Characteristics of poetry will be examined and students will write several types of poetry about a topic and that is meaningful to them. Reading Counts will be used and further information will be sent home in the first weeks of school about the program and the expectations/requirements for it in 5th grade.

Scholastic Book Clubs : Students are encouraged to read daily in and outside of the school. Families have an opportunity to purchase the latest high-interest, age appropriate books from Scholastic Book Clubs. Book order forms are available each month. You can also order on-line anytime from the Scholastic website. You only need the code for my classroom.
